Another GREAT week!

September 6, 2019

Dear Families,

It's been another great week of learning! Everyone is settling into their routines and we are seeing such happy, confident learners. Thank you to everyone who attended Curriculum Nights over the last two weeks. We hope you learned a lot about how this school year will go and, most importantly, know how much our staff cares about our students!

District Updates

MAP Testing Next Week
All students in grades 1-8 will participate in MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing next week. These tests are given in Reading and Math, and students take them three times each year (fall, winter, spring). From these tests, we learn individual student strengths, areas for growth, growth targets, and how each child is doing compared to national grade level expectations. We also use MAP, along with other measures, to determine who needs specific interventions and who is ready to stretch and extend their learning. MAP scores will be shared with parents, and you'll have the chance to talk with teacher(s) about the scores. There's nothing your child/ren need to do to prepare---we got this! :)

Day of Service--Where do the donations go?
As you know, this is D114's fifth year of celebrating the Day of Service. This is our one and only District fundraiser of the year. Where do the funds raised go?

  • To fund all PTA activities and events.
  • To provide teacher grants for special projects.
  • To provide teacher teams with supplies and materials when they make proposals.
  • To fund specific school projects like the Lotus climbing wall and the NEW Stanton sign---which is slated to be installed NEXT WEEK!
This year's Day of Service dollars will, of course, fund our awesome PTA's efforts, but will also pay for materials and expanded programming for Lotus' STEM classes and Stanton's Exploratory (Art, Music, Spanish, STEM) classes. Every single dollar makes a difference, and we have a foundation who had promised to match our funding!

We truly appreciate all our community donors and especially the hard work our students and families put in to make this effort happen. WE ARE TRULY GRATEFUL!

Special Education Legal Updates

With the recent changes to the Illinois School Code, we wanted you to be aware that D114 will continue to provide the child's parents/guardians with copies of written material that will be considered at the IEP meeting at least three school days in advance of a meeting. The written drafts provided to the parents will include, but are not limited to:

  • Full IEP draft with the exception of the services and placement pages
  • Draft evaluation documents for initial evaluations.
  • Full drafts of re-evaluation IEP documents with the exception of the services and placement pages.
In addition to the draft document requirement, the amended statute also requires public school districts to maintain  related service logs and make these logs available to the parent at the student's annual review meeting or upon request. School districts must also inform parents of their right to request these logs within twenty school days of the start of the 2019-2020 school year.

Finally, the amended statute clarifies school districts' obligations relative to response to intervention and parent involvement in the RtI process. School districts must utilize RtI as part of the evaluation process to determine eligibility for a specific learning disability. D114 has had these processes in place and will continue to implement them to ensure our students get the support they need!

Stranger Danger
One of our D114 communities is partnering with the Fox Lake police to monitor a situation where a stranger has been spotted repeatedly. This can happen ANYWHERE, so please remind your child/ren of the following tips:
  • Watch Out for Strangers in Cars. Watch out for cars that follow you.
  • When Using a Computer, be careful who you talk to.
  • Take Care of Each Other. Always stay with your friends, family, or parents and never walk off alone.
